If you’ve recently bought a new HP printer, you might have spotted an option to activate HP+ during setup.
It sounds tempting, doesn’t it? Extra warranty, free ink for a while, tree planting – what’s not to love?
But before you click yes, it’s worth knowing exactly what HP Plus does… and what it locks you into.
What is HP+?
HP+ is an optional service offered on certain HP printers. It’s designed to tie your printer more closely to HP’s online services, and comes with a few perks, including:
• 🔒 Extra security updates and monitoring
• 📱 Printing from more devices (via HP Smart app)
• 🖋️ 6 months of HP’s Instant Ink subscription
• ⚙️ Access to HP’s “Advanced Features” for 2 years
• 🧾 A 2-year extended warranty
• 🌳 HP’s ‘Forest First’ promise to plant trees
Sounds pretty good, right?
Many people activate HP+ for the free 6 months of Instant Ink, who doesn’t like free stuff?
But here’s the bit that HP don’t shout about quite as loudly...
The Catch with HP+
When you activate HP+, you’re agreeing that your printer will only ever use genuine HP cartridges, forever.
That means:
• ❌ No compatible ink cartridges
• ❌ No refilled or remanufactured cartridges (even genuine HP ones that have been recycled)
• ❌ No freedom to shop around for better value ink
Even if you cancel your Instant Ink subscription, the restriction remains in place. Your printer becomes permanently linked to HP’s system, meaning it will reject any non-HP cartridges, including our Stinkyink own-brand compatibles and remanufactured HP cartridges.
So, while HP+ offers some shiny short-term benefits, it can cost you more in the long run by removing your ability to choose where you buy your ink.
Should You Activate HP+?
If you’re happy to always use HP-branded cartridges and like the idea of HP managing your ink deliveries, then HP+ might suit you.
But if you prefer:
• 💰 Lower printing costs
• 🌍 More environmentally friendly options (like our remanufactured ink range)
• 🛒 Freedom to buy your ink where you want
…then it’s best to skip HP+ during setup. You’ll still get a great printer — just with the freedom to choose your ink and toner supplier.
