98% of my printing is done in black only so why do the colours run down almost as quickly as the black cartridges?
Printers that use colour cartridges will use the colours for various reasons, such as, to avoid the colour nozzle heads to dry up through non activity. But also to give a truer black as the colours are mixed in and to prolong the life of the black.

You can try turning the printer on once a week when it is not being used frequently to help prevent the ink drying out. The printer will run through it's start up process priming the print heads ready for use, also performing a quick photocopy is another method that can help :)

I'm afraid not, the printer will only function with one of each colour cartridge in the printer. If you try and replace a colour cartridge with a black one you will get an error message and will be unable to print.
