Wow - Epson unleash range of new LED Laser printers
Wow, Wow, Wowser, what has happened down at Epson I hear you ask, the answer I reply is that they are releasing a comprehensive range of LED Laser printers - Gasp, shock, horror! What is the world coming to?
This is startling news, and follows on the back of Brother releasing a similar range of low cost colour laser printers back in September 2009 (you do lose track of time here in Stinkyink towers!).
OKI are the world leaders in LED Laser technology and, until Brothers announcement last year, were the only manufacturer in the LED Laser sphere. With Epson releasing their new products, they now seem to have a credible range in the bottom end of the mono/colour laser products.

Why is this Unusual? Surely Epson would be releasing New Laser Printers?
The most startling part of this announcement is that only a few months ago Epson were promoting a new range of Business Inkjet printers and claimed that they would compete against the low to mid range Laser marketplace so dominated by HP. Utilising large ink tanks with pigmented ink to give laser like quality, Inkjet printing was the future - apparently.
A switch to LED laser technology is not what we expected, and seems an odd mix considering this new and upcoming high-yield ink technology is to be released later this year.
These new LED printers will compete head on with the office Inktank printers in the same market segment. In a week that has been dominated by multi-Billion hardware and software deals in the technology sector, I think this announcement brings some sanity back on the street.
Epson claims that its new line of LED printers will be capable of a maximum printing speed of 24ppm for the monochrome models, while its colour printers will feature a slightly lower speed of 12ppm. In addition, features common among all five printers include high monthly cycles of up to 20,000 pages a month, along with built-in memory capacities of up to 128MB for what the company claims amounts to "better workload management". In addition, all five printers will also sport lower energy consumption because of their use of LEDs over conventional laser technology.
Since the launch of their Aculaser C900 colour laser printer, which was the first low cost high volume colour laser (and by heck! it was heavy) they seem to have missed the boat in a market that HP has since brutally dominated. Although other players are nibbling at the margins of this traditional HP space they take nearly half of the Worlds growing appetite for colour lasers.
So this announcement from Epson is very significant and, coupled with the technology move from a traditional OCP drum type printer to the LED format, paints an interesting picture for the next few months of Laser printing.
Inkjet Printers and the Olympic games?

It may seem like a bit of a tenuous link but the Olympics actually had a large role to play in the evolution of our modern day desktop printers.
The story starts in the early 60’s, up until now timekeeping for official Olympic events was usually conducted by a Swiss gentleman with a stopwatch. When the Games went to Japan in 1964 the Olympic Committee selected the Japanese company Sura Seikosha, the makers of the SEKIO brand of watches, to time all of the events.
This was around the time when computing was really kicking off and the sub-division that Seikosha tasked with timing the Games made the choice to use a computer system for more accurate and reliable time measurements. Working in this area allowed the team to progress in the areas of LCD screen and Quartz timing technology but that wasn’t the biggest outcome.
The use of a computer system to time the events enabled more accurate and reliable by cutting out the human error from the timings, the only problem it presented was that they had to get the data from their screens and onto paper quickly and clearly. While there were printers on the market, mostly being made by IBM and Xerox, the other offerings were large and difficult to transport. This project lead to the Seikosha team to develop a small device.
The printer worked amazingly for the games but it wasn’t until afterwards that they realised what they’d created. Four years later Seikosha released a printer based heavily on the printers that had been created for the Olympics, the EP-101. The 101 was well received and in 75 Epson America was formed (son of the EP).
The EP-101 is still an incredibly popular printer, it’s undergone a number of revisions but is still easy to see the link to it’s fore-bares. At the start of September Epson celebrated the shipping of its 300000000th mini-printer. Today, Epson's mini-printers still see service in a wide variety of areas ranging from supermarkets to banks and hundreds of high-street outlets of various chains.
Epson have today released a major new update to their iPrint app for the Apple iPhone and iPad. By far the biggest enhancement to the app is the ability to print documents stored in cloud services like Dropbox, Box.net and Evernote straight to your iPrint enabled printer.
You can also save documents scanned on your Epson multi-function printer/scanner to the iPad and then send them by email.
Epson iPrint is free, and compatible with any device running iOS 4.1 or later. The app works only with Epson-brand printers.
You can download the app for Free from iTunes
Update - Mini Epson iPrint Review!
I've just tested the new iPrint app with an Epson Stylyus SX510W that we had knocking about for testing our range of Epson Ink Cartridges and despite an initial stumbling block where the app crashed, it's worked really well. The app found the printer without a problem and then proceeded to print a photo from my iPad 2 at speeds not much worse than printing over USB. My favourite part of the app however, is how it allows you to scale and rotate images in relation to the A4 page by simply pinching the screen, a feature that was incredibly intuitive to use!
The app also flawlessly printed documents from my Google docs account, and files stored in Dropbox. Authenticating with these services was as simple as entering my username and password, then I was able to browse just like I do on the web and click on the big print button.
The latest creation by Epson is a highly portable, massively compatible photo printer. What makes it unique is the design, looking like a cross between a lunchbox and a microwave oven, it also comes equipped with a handle on top!
Despite it's small size the Colorio E820 comes packed with features to enable it to truly be a PC free Printer;
- Handle on top for ease of transport.
- 7 inch 800 x...
In a recent interview with the BBC chief executive of Epson, Minoru Usi spoke about his work with the company, where he sees their future efforts leading.
Most interesting to me were his statements on what he sees as the next big things in the printing industry.
