You can mix and match compatibles and originals, so you should only need to change your ink as and when one runs out. The compatibles in question give ink levels, in the same way as the originals.

I have left a revue of the Canon IP 4850 cartridges I bought last year. My question is, how long is the expiry date? I use around two sets per annum and am not sure whether to buy two or four sets to take back to South Africa with me. Also, what is the best way to store them?

Most inks will last 6-18 months if stored sensibly, however Canon unfortunately don't give a precise expiry date with their products so I couldn't give a better answer than that.
We would advise storing them somewhere cool and dark, in their original packaging before installing them. Conditions that are too hot, too cold, or too dry, can cause them to expire prematurely.

The compatibles and originals have the same capacities as one another - each colour, and the smaller black have 9ml of ink in them, while the larger black has 19ml.
Unfortunately Canon don't provide approximate page yields, so I couldn't say how much printing this will allow you to do.
