The Chromatic Typewriter Dec 06, 2011 12:00 by John Sollars

American artist, Tyree Callahan has modified an old 1937 model typewriter to type colour onto his pages.

The typewriter, called the chromatic typewriter, has had each of it’s 47 keys altered so that each one prints one of two hues onto the paper fed through the machine. Mr Callahan created the typewriter to be his 2011 entry into the west collects prize competition, for which the grand prize is $25000.

While the typewriter has been made for this competition, I’d really like to see if any of the great works of literature turned into great great works of art when typed up on this device.

His and other entries can be found (and voted for) on the West Collects website, here.

To wet your appetite for some of the other work I’ve included some of the previous winners below. The artists thoughts on them and more images can also be found on the West Collect website.
