Expert offers tips on network printer security April 30, 2011 11:10 by Chris Rails

Security should be considered one of the most important parts of printing, alongside the device itself and ink cartridges, according to one expert.
In an article for Silicon, Louella Fernandes explained that endpoint security is an essential aspect of a company's data-loss prevention strategy and said firms need to make sure their network printers are safe.
She stated that although most businesses have anti-virus and firewall software in place, they often forget to secure multifunction peripherals that are also on their computer network.
Offering advice on how to improve printer security, Ms Fernandes said: "Businesses should gain control of their printer fleet through a managed print service that will enable them to measure what is being printed, by whom, and deploy layered security features."
The expert added that user-authentication or pull printing and encryption can also help.
Earlier this month the Information Commissioner's Office found City of York Council had breached data protection laws by disclosing sensitive data to a third party after it was mistakenly collected from a shared printer.
