Printing out your food December 29, 2010 15:07 by Matt Bird

There comes a time in everyone's life where you have to choose.

  • A choice between good and evil...
  • Right and wrong...
  • Life or death...
  • Manual cooking or a food printer.

Eh?

You heard me. A food printer.

Posing an almost impossible choice, I myself am not strong enough to make this call. cowers away Are you man enough to the task?

Printing FOOD !!!

Thanks to Gawker for the image

Imagine the scenario. You're sitting at home, and suddenly a rumbling occurs. Blast this hunger that has consumed my world!

But not to fear, I recently received my new ink cartridges in the post, leaving me free to print the latest Ramsay feast.

Science fiction? THINK AGAIN!!!!

Experts at Cornell University's Computational Synthesis Lab are working on a 3-D food printer to enable users to print off food meals.

Limited to food stuffs that can be delivered through a syringe at present, it is hoped that this can ultimately lead to (you might want to sit down trekkies) similar functionality shown by replicators in the Star Trek series.

Amazingly, one chef (Homaro Cantu) at Chicago's Moto has managed to print sushi using an inkjet printer. The wonders of technology never cease to amaze me. Not content with this achievement, he then went on to make the reasonable claim:

Long-term, the team believes that people will take to the technology by creating their own 3D printable food recipe social networks with everyone improving on each other's creations.
"3D printing will do for food what e-mail and instant messaging did for communication," says Mr Cantu.

Thoughts?

Grocery deliveries would certainly take an interesting turn, gone are the fruit boxes, replaced by bucket loads of syringes. Should printing be limited to recipes? Or should technology be embraced?
