SEOmoz Conference and Pro Training Series August 26, 2009 16:55 by John Sollars

Howdy from Seattle.

Rob and myself have just spent the last two days immersed in the murky waters of SEO land.  SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation and lets face it if you don’t know that then you should probably not be reading this blog.

The Conference was billed as an expert level Training session aimed at giving you tips and tricks that you can implement to make a difference on your website.  Having had the opportunity to sleep on what we have learned we both consider that we weren’t out of our depth in the illustrious company that we were rubbing shoulders with.  I have to say the SEOmoz team had assembled a heavyweight team of presenters and they were all very good.  The odd thing we found was that what we thought were the two best speakers were both English and the top one of them was from Birmingham!.  If only we’d known we’d have stayed at home!.

The real key for me was to leave the conference with one short term gem that we can implement quickly and will make us some money very quickly to pay for the trip, and one long term plan that will make a difference by this time next year.  At the end of day one I was a little disappointed that we hadn’t learnt anything that we didn’t already know although there was something that we can do to make a long term difference.  The presentations had been good, professional and amusing, but not instantly money making.  Day two and the morning session was really interesting, but still no nugget, but after lunch a guy from Brum walked onto the stage and blew us away. We both came back to our rooms and started work on changes to the site last night, and we’ll spend most of today and tomorrow morning brainstorming what we are going to do.  That was the nugget, and we’ve got the long term plan for the business as well – so I would say £6K well spent.

Seattle is a lovely city, and I would think it is a real pleasure and privilege to live and work here, but the green fields of sunny Shropshire beckon and we’ll be leaving in the morning to get back into our normal lives.  Having said that I feel reinvigorated for the business and refocused.  I think that after a long period of time we get stale and forget the pleasures of running an internet business and maybe lose our customer focus.  I will confess that this described me and I have received a wake up call from the conference so thanks very much guys and we’ll see you all again next year.

I intend to write a series of articles about what we have learned and hope that you might follow them.  these links
